Duncan Ferguson came to prominence at an early age – a tall, lean striker with the world at his feet. He made his international debut for Scotland aged just twenty against Germany, and hit the bar with a bicycle kick. He was destined, it seemed, to be a golden boy, to develop into one of Scotland’s most successful exports. Perhaps he did. But it says much about Ferguson that this question can give rise to much impassioned debate.

He certainly earned his fortune, and has been able to drift into retirement a very wealthy man. For someone born into the notoriously rough housing estate of Raploch in Stirling, this might be reward enough for an injury-jinxed career in professional football. But his progress was also hampered by another darkness – anger. There is little a footballer can achieve when sitting suspended on the sidelines. And there’s no roar from the crowd in a prison cell …
