Barbara Whitfield

Barbara Whitfield’s novel, The Rest is Silence, was shortlisted for the inaugural Jenny Brown Associates Debut Writers Over 50 Award.

In 1939, introverted teenage Muriel Mead vanishes from her Oxfordshire village. The police investigation falters and is lost in the disruption of war – and so the case remains famously unsolved. Fifty years later, two varying accounts uncover the truth behind Muriel’s disappearance.

Barbara Whitfield began writing plays and screenplays after leaving London for Oxford as a mature student. While in Oxford, she completed a doctorate in Spanish Art History and worked as a researcher for the OED and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. After a move to Wales, she worked as a non-fiction editor. She currently lives on a smallholding in Pembrokeshire and writes full-time.
