Monica Wolfe was born and raised in Romania during its grim Communist years. She started learning English at the age of 10, went on to study linguistics and English literature at Bucharest University and – after the 1989 revolution – social anthropology at Oxford University. She married a Scot and built a 20-year career in international aid, travelling and living in countries ravaged by wars or natural disasters. And wrote fiction and poetry during any lulls in the day job – of which there weren’t many.
